Nature Study Fridays- Our Friend the Earthworm

Due to being an obsessive planner and procrastinator... I have to "plan" nature study in so that it will actually get done! So... Fridays have become our Nature Study day (daddy is always home on Fridays so he gets to be involved!) Today we studied all about the Earthworm and found out so many great things that none of us knew (even mommy) like...

Earthworms are workers! They are not just little "icky" creatures that mommy hates to find in pockets and squished in between fingers BUT they are actually little farmers that till the ground! My kids thought this was so cool!

Earthworms are completely deaf, though sensitive to vibration. They have no eyes but can distinguish between light and darkness.

Earthworms are nocturnal, they rarely come out during the day unless "drowned out" of their burrow. I got lucky here since I did not know this but am
thankful for the rain that we had yesterday so that we could find these little creatures this morning!

I do believe that we all love a good nature study even if it does mean dirty little hands!

  2. Now you need to read "How to eat Fried Worms" out loud to your kids. During your next "worm" study you can cook them and eat them. Yum.

  3. These pictures are fabulous, and I love that you have to plan in your nature study. If I don't meticulously plan stuff in, it will not get done. Sad, but true.

  4. Wonderful!! Good job mama! It is funny, how as much as we want some things to come naturally and organically, we still have to plan them... I like how you are doing your nature study every Friday.

  6. Hey, I recognize the Anna Botsford Comstock spread! I decide the topic then read her HNS the night before so I can give fascinating facts as the moments arise.
