What do we do without a TV you ask?
We play games!
We are a game loving family.
Do other couples look forward to the day when their children are old enough to play spades or monopoly; and not the Jr. kind? Well, we do!
Is it wrong for my husband to enjoy the fact that his 10 year old daughter can play poker? Is this normal?
Who cares about normal anyways, right?
We have finally hit that place where our children can play the adult board games, and it's so much fun! My little guy usually partners with either my husband or me but we let him be the main player. We also get to count this as part of our homeschool :)
Our favorite family game is Settlers of Catan.
We love having other couples over to join us without the kiddos too. After the children are put to bed, we would play into the weee hours of the night. Board Games, coffee and dessert. A perfect ending to a day and a great way to get to know other people!
Do you game? If so, what games are your family favorites?
We go through seasons, mostly winter, where we play games. This winter we've regularly played Apples to Apples Junior before bed. We also love various card games and domino games. We invite friends and D's coworkers over for pizza, beer (root variety for the kiddos) and games night. All ages. Very fun.
ReplyDeleteWe LOVE Apples to Apples!! I think the root beer is an awesome addition, will have to do this sometime :)
ReplyDeleteyes! we love games. apples to apples is a favorite of ours also, along with sequence and clue. we are so not into tv here, but definitely into games.
ReplyDeleteScrabble!! Todd and I used to make weekly morning visits to Chick-fil-a so that the girls could play on the slides and we would challenge each other to a game of scrabble (our CFA has board games available for anyone to play). I loved those mornings :) We eventually decided to buy our own set so we could play more often. I think its been a while since we played it...time to break it out again! The kids love Connect 4, Trouble and Memory.
ReplyDeleteWe really like Settlers too....have you tried Dominion? Just learned how to play that last Friday night. It was really fun and fast to teach/learn.
ReplyDeleteOoooooh what a great idea!! Caleb and I play Wordfued on our phones and it's a blast. I also get to play with relatives out of town and it makes the distance seem a bit less.
ReplyDeleteNever played Dominion but am on my way right now to google it. Thanks for the recommendation and coming from another Settlers fan, woohoo!
ReplyDeleteWe don't watch TV either! My husband and I sometimes watch movies and The Office online. We love board games! You have to get Ticket to Ride!
ReplyDeleteNo TV either and we are a big gaming family. My favorite since I've been four years old is the matching card game (Concentration). We have a beautiful set from eeBoo.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been able to comment anywhere in awhile as we've been off galavanting. Your hair is beautiful - and I know you didn't do it to please me.
ps Hospitality happens here. We're (somewhat) affectionately known as the "House of Dangers."
We dont own Ticket to Ride but have played it once with some friends and really loved it! Thanks for bringing it up!!
ReplyDelete"House of Dangers" Thats awesome and totally us :)
ReplyDeleteWe have a TV but it only gets used for limited Wii on weekends. We LOVE games and play all the time as a family. Some of our current faves that we all can play are Backseat Drawing (really good for learning the skill of giving detailed directions- left/right, up/down, etc.), Doodle Dice, Sorry, Blokus and Ding Dong (memory game with a twist). The ones we play with the older kids are Stare, Stratego, Chess, Monopoly Deal card game (short and fun) and Apples to Apples. We have so many! We have Settlers of Catan but haven't played it yet.
ReplyDeleteWe have a TV in our downstairs family room- but we don't use it much. Our fave games are UNO and 20 guesses. :)
ReplyDelete{By the way- LOVE YOUR NEW HAIR DO!}
Love playing games as a family... One of our favorites is "Boggle".. and it's great with vocabulary.
ReplyDeleteooooh Backseat Drawing sounds really great and super creative.
ReplyDeleteWhat is 20 guesses?
ReplyDeleteI was just talking about this with DH "family game night". We love to play WildCraft, it is really great for as a homeschooling game as well http://www.learningherbs.com/wildcraft.html. kids don't need to read for this one, so good for the littles...can't wait to play the "older kid" games!
ReplyDeleteHi Heather! First thank you for the comment. Sadly, I did not make that cork decor. My friends bought it for us. I'm actually saving corks to make a huge bulletin board for our kitchen to pin photos on :) Secondly, my family is big on gaming. When I was 5 years old my parents taught me and my sister how to play Setback. I'm 26 and every summer on vacation we still play and ahve tournaments. Games, boardgames I'm talking and cards and just creative mind, like sharades is so much more enjoyable then videogames. I truly love that you do this with your kids!! I wish more parents did :)

ReplyDeleteOh we love games too! And you have a wonderful blog! I love your approach to life.
ReplyDeleteOh we love games too! And I love your blog. You have such a wonderful approach to life!
ReplyDeleteOh we love games too! And what a wonderful blog you have! I love your approach to life...
ReplyDeleteI wish we played more games. Thanks for the encouragement. We find it hard to find games that work for all the age groups.
ReplyDeleteLove that photo! We play games. I love Pente and I just played a sweet game of Mancala with my daughter yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI love it! We grew up with no tv and played games often. In fact, my entire childhool included Friday night games. Your kids will someday thank you for not having a tv!

ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog! Your family might like our Killer Uno Rules or some of the other games I review from time to time...
Settlers is one of our family's favorite games also! Have you ventured into Cities and Knights or Seafarers?
ReplyDeleteSo - similarities are *creepy* - my husband and I were both home schooled and plan to home school our kids.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have a tv. We play tons of games.
It is not beneath me to beat my 2 and 4 year old at a game of Memory.
But I cannot wait until they are old enough to play "real" games. My husband and I play almost daily - Chess, Skip-bo, Wooly Bully and a variety of other 2 player games we have collected.
Settlers is a favorite for when company comes, along with Carcossonce {so spelled that wrong. so too lazy to google it.} and "The Bean game" - which isn't called that technically, but we call it that.
We have two dressers full of games. Which is saying a lot because we are fairly minimalistic in what we own. We just love games.
YaY for meeting other homeschool graduates!! Thanks for all the game suggestions, cant wait to add some of those to our collection!
ReplyDeleteWe haven't, Seafarers sounds super exciting though!
